THE SHORT VERSION

What you will learn

  • Compare the same model, storage, condition, and lock status.
  • Older Pro models can be strong values only when battery, support, and seller protection are adequate.
  • Carrier credits are earned over time; they are not cash discounts.
  • Use Apple's current specifications and support information to verify the exact model.
LESSON 01

Why two iPhone prices may describe different products

An iPhone name is not a complete product identifier. Storage, color availability, carrier lock, region, condition, battery state, warranty provider, and included accessories can all change value. A marketplace result for a used 128GB carrier model should never establish the price history of a new unlocked 256GB phone.

Record the exact generation and size—standard, Plus, Pro, Pro Max, Air, or SE-style model—before comparing. Confirm the model number after delivery because international variants and carrier inventory can differ in physical SIM, eSIM, network support, and service eligibility.

LESSON 02

New current-generation iPhones

Buying the current generation usually provides the longest remaining support, the widest choice of storage and color, and the clearest manufacturer warranty path. The tradeoff is a higher acquisition price and faster depreciation during the first part of ownership. Launch-day carrier promotions may offset the device cost but can require a premium plan and a long credit schedule.

Current does not automatically mean best. Compare the new feature with the previous generation in terms of camera capability, display, battery, connectivity, repair options, and expected ownership. If none changes your work, comfort, or replacement date, the prior generation may offer better value.

LESSON 03

Older new-stock and previous-generation models

Retailers sometimes discount remaining inventory after a successor appears. Verify that the phone is genuinely new, has the promised US warranty, and is not an activated, open-box, or renewed unit presented through an ambiguous listing. Selection can narrow quickly, particularly for higher storage tiers.

Estimate remaining supported life from the original model timeline, not the sale date. Also compare battery service cost and future resale demand. A modest discount may not compensate for fewer useful years, while a substantial discount can make an older flagship rational for a shorter ownership plan.

LESSON 04

Refurbished and used iPhones

The meaningful questions are who inspected the device, what battery standard applies, whether parts can be verified, who honors the warranty, and how returns work. Cosmetic grades do not describe battery health or component provenance. Test Face ID or Touch ID, cameras, microphones, speakers, charging, cellular service, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and display uniformity during the return window.

Check Activation Lock removal, carrier lock status, financing or blacklist risk, storage, and model identity. Water-resistance should not be assumed after repair. Preserve the listing, condition description, serial documentation, and delivery evidence in case the received device differs from the offer.

LESSON 05

Carrier trade-in and bill-credit offers

A carrier may finance the iPhone and apply a credit each month. The full advertised benefit depends on maintaining the eligible line and plan for the complete term. Calculate a second scenario for leaving early: count only credits already received, then include any remaining device balance and plan premium paid to date.

Value the surrendered phone separately. If it could be sold for a meaningful amount, the promotion's incremental benefit is the carrier credit minus the value of the device given up. Photograph the trade-in, record identifiers, use tracked shipping, and save the exact promotion terms.

LESSON 06

The iPhone comparison worksheet

For each offer, record model, storage, condition, seller, lock status, cash price, tax basis, financing, trade-in, credit term, required plan, warranty, return deadline, battery disclosure, and remaining support. Keep cash savings, conditional credits, and the value of the surrendered phone in separate rows.

Choose the offer with the best conservative outcome that meets your requirements—not the largest maximum discount. Confirm final specifications and service procedures with Apple, and confirm activation, lock, and promotion terms with the carrier or seller immediately before purchasing.
