Why more megapixels do not guarantee a better phone camera
Evaluate sensor area, lens, processing, focus, stabilization, and output resolution together.
Resolution is only one variable
Megapixels count photosites or output pixels, not image quality. Sensor area, photosite behavior, lens sharpness, focus accuracy, stabilization, exposure, color processing, and noise reduction all influence usable detail.
High-resolution sensors commonly combine pixels for ordinary output and reserve full-resolution modes for favorable light. The default photo may be far smaller than the headline number.
Different cameras need separate review
A phone can advertise one high-resolution main camera while using much smaller ultrawide, telephoto, macro, or selfie sensors. Compare each focal length instead of assigning the main-camera specification to the whole system.
Autofocus on an ultrawide enables macro use more effectively than a low-resolution fixed-focus macro camera added mainly to increase lens count.
Judge the intended output
Social sharing, prints, cropping, low-light subjects, action, portraits, and video create different demands. Samples should be viewed at realistic sizes and in difficult conditions, not only bright daylight.
Camera comparisons should disclose software version because processing changes can materially affect results after launch.
