Phone brightness claims and outdoor readability
Interpret typical, HDR peak, outdoor peak, measurement windows, reflectance, and thermal limits.
Peak brightness is conditional
A manufacturer may publish typical full-screen brightness, HDR peak brightness over a small area, and temporary outdoor boost. Those values answer different questions and should not be mixed into a single ranking.
Automatic brightness, ambient-light sensing, battery level, temperature, color mode, and content can determine whether a peak is reached.
Reflections compete with light output
A highly reflective screen can be harder to read than a lower-nit panel with effective anti-reflective treatment. Polarization and viewing angle also matter outdoors and with sunglasses.
Independent measurements should state pattern size, duration, color mode, and ambient conditions to be meaningfully compared.
Sustained behavior matters
Navigation and camera use in sunlight can heat the phone and trigger dimming. A momentary peak may not represent a long outdoor session.
Buyers should consider minimum brightness and dimming behavior for nighttime comfort as well as maximum brightness for sunlight.
