Phone buying guide
Phone network bands and compatibility
Understand why an unlocked phone can still lack important carrier features.
Model numbers matter
Retail names can cover regional hardware variants with different LTE and 5G bands. Confirm the exact model number against the carrier’s compatibility system before importing or changing networks.
Basic calls may work while 5G, aggregation, Wi-Fi calling, voicemail, or emergency features remain unsupported.
Bands are only part of certification
Matching a frequency list does not guarantee carrier provisioning. Operators may require an approved identifier, firmware profile, or certification for advanced services.
MVNO support can differ from the host network because activation systems and feature policies are not identical.
Check the intended locations
Coverage needs vary by country and by rural, suburban, and indoor use. Low-band support can matter more than peak millimeter-wave speed for many buyers.
Verify roaming, emergency calling, eSIM activation, and voice-over-LTE before relying on a phone while traveling.
