Phone buying guide
Unlocked vs. carrier phones
Evaluate compatibility, financing, promotions, portability, and carrier-lock rules.
Unlocked describes flexibility, not universal compatibility
An unlocked phone is not restricted to one carrier, but it still needs compatible radio bands, supported network features, and an accepted model identifier. Regional variants can differ even when their retail names look identical.
Confirm the exact model number with the intended carrier, especially for international purchases, smaller carriers, eSIM activation, Wi-Fi calling, and advanced network features.
Carrier offers exchange flexibility for incentives
Carrier financing can provide trade-in bonuses or bill credits that exceed ordinary retail discounts. Those incentives may require a qualifying plan, a new line, a port-in, autopay, or a multi-year credit schedule. Locking rules and payoff requirements also affect when the phone can move to another network.
An unlocked cash offer is easier to compare because the device price is less entangled with service. That simplicity can be worth more than a nominal promotion when plans may change.
Choose based on the whole relationship
Compare the phone, service plan, taxes and fees, expected ownership period, international needs, and exit cost together. If the carrier plan is already the right plan, an incentive can be genuine value. If the plan is being chosen only to unlock a phone discount, calculate the added service cost over the entire term.
